I have the honour to invite your attention

to the fact that in the Sterling Salary Scheme the pay of the

Chief Inspector in the Police Force is placed on a higher

scale than that of the Chief Detective Inspector; the difference

being £60 per annum both at the minimum and at the maximum.

As the dollar salaries of these officers are identical, and as

the duties and responsibilities of the Chief Detective Inspector

are if any thing greater than those of the Chief Inspector. I

am of opinion that the Sterling Salaries should be made identi-

cal also. If you approve of this suggestion, by which the

posts of Chief Inspector and Chief Detective Inspector will

be classed in the scheme at salaries of £300 rising to £360

per annum no immediate provision will require to be made for

the increase, as the present holders of both these posts are

on dollar salaries.

2.

I am also of opinion that the Chief

Detective Inspector should draw the same conveyance allowance

as that granted to the Chief Inspector, namely $285 per annum.

This will necessitate an increase of $141 in next year's

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
